This year, in Treaty 6 territory, a bison calf was born. For the Assiniboine, Cree and Ojibwa people who signed the treaty, this is a great occasions.

They were part of the several nomadic tribes that roamed this part of what is now central/south Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Bison of pure genetic stock from the US and Canada were used to establish a herd and it seems to be flourishing. Perhaps not a great historical occasion but I like to think that the re- establishment of bison in traditional lands may help us along the route to reconciliation with the First Nations of the country.

You can find Treaty 6 territory on this map. About the time that Sitting Bull made his run for the border, the new country of Canada was engaged in negotiations with several groups of tribes to establish what are called the "numbered treaties".
