My ancestor Joseph Buer who died 1796 in Little Pardon, in Essex, England, has recorded on his grave stone that he was "formally a servant to Lord John Drummond at the siege of Phillipsburg in 1734.".

I have learnt since that Lord John Drummond was a Scotts Jacobite who served in the French army at that time. There is nothing in the subsequent history of Joseph Buer or his descendants to indicate that he was either Catholic (he was buried in a Church of England grave yard) nor a political radical.

My question is where would I be able to find or locate some records of the regiments that took part at the siege of Phillipsburg in 1734 ?

It is possible that there were Irish regiments within the French army of the period and perhaps these might contain English or Scottish soldiers. I know that in the later Jacobite period a Scottish regiment was formed, and that it also had deserters from the British army in it, would this also be similar for this earlier period/ war ?

Any help to understand how or why my ancestor got involved in this obscure conflict would be appreciated.

Thanks
