Abigail Adams urges husband to " remember the ladies".
3/31/2023 6:17:25 AM
In a letter dated March 31, 1776, Abigail Adams writes to her husband, John Adams, urging him and the other members of the Continental Congress not to forget about the nation’s women when fighting for America’s independence from Great Britain.

The future First Lady wrote in part, “I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”

Nearly 150 years before the House of Representatives voted to pass the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, Adams letter was a private first step in the fight for equal rights for women. Recognized and admired as a formidable woman in her own right, the union of Abigail and John Adams persists as a model of mutual respect and affection; they have since been referred to as “America’s first power couple.” Their correspondence of over 1,000 letters written between 1762 and 1801 remains in the Massachusetts Historical Society and continues to give historians a unique perspective on domestic and political life during the revolutionary era.

Abigail bore six children, of whom five survived. Abigail and John’s eldest son, John Quincy Adams, served as the sixth president of the United States. Only two women, Abigail Adams and Barbara Bush, have been both wives and mothers of American presidents.

Abigail Adams was a truly remarkable woman. All the more maddening and obscene that her statue in Boston, along with the memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Regiment was defaced and vandalized by BLM and ATIFA goons in 2020!

There, I corrected your comment for you!

You're welcome!

Vandalism and rioting is not protected by the US Constitution. You prove your ignorance of the Constitution by saying such nonsense. That`s like the fool who says that in America people can stand trial to prove their innocence!

No...under our system, the state must go to trial and prove guilt...the defendant is presumed innocent and does not have to prove it. If you believe violent protest repleat with vandalized property, and burned streets and buildings, and assaulted officers is protected by the Constitution....what fricken country are you talking about? It`s not ours!

There...your welcome. Now if you continue to post politically motivated memes on the sites like Battle Of Gettysburg, or Civil War Battles (eastern theater), or in this instance, posting about Abigail Adams on a "Pre-19th Century Battles" which have nothing to do with what you are posting there...I will complain to Brian Williams to ask that nonsense stop. Hope that is clear!

I have repeatedly called you a troll in the past...and it is even more clear now.

And, as an aside....what type of complete idiots "protest" the death of a black man....by vandalizing the Augustus St Gaudens memorial relief of the 54th Mass, the first Black regiment to win glory for itself, and lead to the enlistment of 180,000 black troop that fought for the union, or the statue of a very clear abolitionist like John Adams` wife. The level of absolute stupidity of the college educated youth of today is incredible!

Peaceful protest is protected by the US Constitution. The right to assemble is protected by the US Constitution. You prove your ignorance of the US Constitution and how it is interpreted by the Courts when you say such BS. Last I checked, the Boston Tea party was a riot, and vandalismi did occur. So it is on our Nation's DNA. You can add tar and feathering of tax collectors too!

Complain all you want. No-one is forcing you to read what I present.

Name calling is the last resort of the person who can't intelligently debate.

The sacrifice of those members of the 54th Mass, evidently was ignored by those police who murdered Floyd, Ahmad Aubery and Breonna Taylor.

What is more incredible is the absolute ignorance and stupidity of the police!

Last I checked, the American Revolution was a pre-19th Century battle. And we are discussing a comment made by one of the wives of on of our Patriots, and who became the 1st US Ambassador to Great Britain and eventually the 2nd US President.

It is a reminder of the role of American women in our fight for Independence.

Didn't women participate in Canadian Independence? Or played a role in Great Britain?

You know, you don't have to read it.

And you don't have to copy and paste everything that is on this History.com website. I doubt that you were overly concerned with posting anything that had to do with the role of woman. This article happened to be the next one up.

The site itself is US centric often prefacing any article with "this day in US history" which sums up its inherent biases.

1. Actually, I run down the list and just pick and choose which article I think the group would find the most edifying.

2. The US centric articles balance out the Canadian centric and the British centric articles.

You are correct nobody is forcing anybody to read what you present but your posts are like a car accident on the highway sometimes its hard to avoid ones eyes to the absurdity but then I think your posts should be treated as such say nothing and keep driving by.

In one of your google search cut and paste inspired rants look up the word debate wait Ill do it for you, debate

dĭ-bāt ′Debate:
intransitive verb
To consider something; deliberate.
To engage in argument by discussing opposing points.
To engage in a formal discussion or argument. synonym: discuss.

You consider the police to be ignorant and stupid but yet you have committed yourself to be utterly dependent on them for your protection and safety says more about you than the police. I see no need to insult you or call you names your posts clearly indicate who and what you are. And even if I was to insult you what good would it do? I doubt it would penetrate that thick thick mental armor of yours you have created for yourself by figuring everything out and google knowing all there is to know, one reaches a pinnacle when one has reached the top of Maslow's hierarchy when you realized that your the smartest man you know!

congrats and stay safe man!

NY, I will put this in all caps in the hope that you can read it and comprehend: FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND TO PEACEFULLY ASSEMBLE AND ADDRESS GRIEVANCES IS PROTECTED UNDER THE 1ST AMENDMENT. FREEDOM TO COMMIT VIOLENT ACTS-FREEDOM TO BURN AND LOOT AND DESTROY BUILDINGS AND ASSAULT POLICE AND FIREMEN......IS NOT PROTECTED SPEECH. THEY ARE CRIMINAL ACTS!

What happened at the US Capitol on January 6th was a riot...not an insurrection...but a riot and crimes should have been charged for those based upon what they did. So too were the actions of BLM and ANTIFA mobs , in hundreds of cities and towns during 2020.

Yet you actually have the audacity to rationalize the vandalism done to those statues in Boston ( I assume elsewhere) as being legitimate. That is nonsense..and pathetic.

There was a purpose why I made mention of the vandalism of Abigail Adams statue in response to your initial post. I knew that you would post praise for Abigail Adams....then rationalize away the vandalism done to her statue. You are a hypocrite.... because you always seem to find fault and consign blame to one side...then excuse and rationalize the same thing done by those who believe as you do!

If you knew your American History like you say you do, you would know of the Boston Tea Party, a riot where looting occurred. And which us still celebrated in the US to this day. Also consider the Boston Massacre, another riot. You certainly know of the Draft Riots in NYC of those protesting a draft into the Union Army. How about the Bread riots in Richmond Virginia? Race riots erupted in Memphis (in May) and New Orleans (in July), in which groups of whites attacked newly freed African Americans. In Memphis 12 churches were burned, 46 African Americans were killed, and more than 70 were wounded, and in New Orleans 35 African Americans were killed and more than 100 were wounded. How about Labor riots of the 1970s? African American neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles (sparked by the belief that excessive force had been used in the arrest of an African American motorist) resulted in massive destruction of property and 34 deaths. Gay Americans rioted in Greenville at the Stonewall Inn.

What happened at the US Capitol on January 6th was an insurrection against the duly elected Government, instigated by the Out-going President. BLM had nothing to do with it.

Very simple.....don't gawk at a car wreck.

If you don't like it that I cut and paste....you're entitled to your opinion.

I don't consider all the police to be ignorant and stupid.I just feel that in today's society, law enforcement officers should have a 4 year college education.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names and insults will NEVER hurt me.

Congrats and stay safe man!

Law enforcement officers dont "need" a four year college education it helps very little in a use of force situation while education is good for everyone a degree in criminal justice helps little when faced with someone who is assaultive or when confronted with a high pressure situation where one wrong decision could be a life changer for the officer and others involved in the situation. Law enforcement officers need better training especially dealing with the mental ill, need respect, support from the public and government its a thankless job and few want to do it anymore and this is making the situation worse because the recruits are of lower quality and will cause even more problems down the road. Luckily Im getting near the end of my career. I fear what the future holds.

A common sense approach is needed to improve the situation defunding the police and blaming cops as a whole helps nobody, Im sure you have worked with some terrible coworkers they exist everywhere but a bad officer can cause society to melt down. Common sense is needed to deal with this problem by police unions who protect the bad officer and the protestor who wants to deface a a memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and abolish the police, but alas common sense is hard to find these days over reaction seems to be the norm.

vpatrick, I disagree. Society has become more vast and more complicated. Police officers must know how to deal with every day people, and not be so abusive.

A common sense approach would be to have a standardized test, and have police officers take courses every year to be re-certified.

NY do you even read responses?

You quoted it even

I said in your quote of me Law enforcement officers need better training and we do receive training every year to be recertified I am pulled out every year for one week as most law enforcement officers are and receive training and must be certified and courses completed before returning to work. Subjects covered; Use of Force, De-escalation Techniques, Mental health, Officer Wellness, Law, CPR first aid, PREA, Firearm qualification, Defensive tactics, courses on discrimination prevention and civil rights among others. I think it should be for two weeks or more but departments dont get the funding the genius of defunding the police is helping with this. Yearly training standards helps greatly four year degrees help less. But who with a four year degree would want to go into a job that makes you instantly hated, is thankless, extremely dangerous, unrewarding and leads to alcoholism and an early grave last time I checked 66 was the average age of death for a law enforcement officer while 78 is the norm ? Standards are being lowered to hire recruits not increased just to fill the ranks thanks to knee jerk reactions by the reactionaries. And I dont know of any law enforcement agency in my State at least that tolerates abusive behavior by its officers. I will tell you I talk to many officers from all different departments besides my Sheriffs dep that officers are afraid to intervene, afraid to prevent crime, and will only respond after the fact because every action is faced with such scrutiny that it is safer for the officer's family, house, job, to do little as possible and just respond when absolutely necessary. So now its job security to do as little as possible, have less interactions with the public and do as little as possible to protect the public to avoid scrutiny, this is why we are losing our major cities to crime. Ask Portland Oregon

By the way I have a four year degree my academy training and yearly training standards have helped me much more and I did have to take a standardized test to be hired as every law enforcement officer has too in the United States.

Please know what you are talking about before commenting or at least read the responses. its the sign of intelligence.

Oh and to make this post relevant to the thread John Adams wouldn't have been the man he was without Abigale from my readings John wasn't very likeable personally but I guess there is someone out there for everyone.

stay safe man especially if you rely on the Police for your safety!

I did what I accused you of doing the same thing over and over again and getting the same result, feeding coal into the stove making the fire bigger.

I will refrain here from now on I guess at least here, I needed the slap in the face to wake up. He just ............ makes me bananas, when we went at it I respected you and your arguments were routed in truth and well thought out positions, this is different.

As there is no heading for the American Revolution, this heading is as close to it as we can get. This heading is not just for Napoleon's first battle.

Since it had to do with the American Revolution, I decided to place it where I did.

If you don't like it, don't read it.
