US Army in Vietnam War. What does "HTC" mean
3/27/2023 2:10:37 PM
Hi all.
I have a Zippo of an American soldier who fought in Vietnam. The lighter was manufactured in 1966. The engraved inscription reads: "Viet-Nam 68-69 HTC" (+ a flag on the other side). Pic: https://i.postimg.cc/q7StFSS1/aaa.jpg. Because of its modest engraving, the lighter seems to be original, not fake. What could the abbreviation HTC mean?

High Tension Conflict, IIRC. It was a jab at the government's "Low Tension Conflict" meme. Snarky.

A partial list of such: http://www2.iath.virginia.edu/sixties/HTML_docs/Resources/Glossary/Sixties_Term_Gloss_D_J.html#Letter%20'H'

Thank you. "High Tension Conflict" seems somewhat unorthodox for such Zippos. Rather a name of an army unite would be expected or the like.

Everything can have two or more meaning, of course. I went with the one that carved into my gun tub.

Current usage back then, haven't seen it used in the fashion I employed for a good long while. But military acronyms are a mine field. Tread lightly. (My neighbor, whom I called "Gunny", used acronyms constantly. He knew I wanted to join the Navy and he was passing along info I later found very useful.)
