Your favorite Gettysburg board game?
Posted on: 8/30/2019 10:13:21 AM

I know we have some war boardgamers around here. I've been looking for a good Gettysburg game but having trouble deciding which one to pick up. I'm looking for something not too complex with pages and pages of rules, but also something that simulates the battle historically. I've heard good things about Badges of Courage: Gettysburg. Ever played it? Any others to recommend?

I have three games on Gettysburg that I find quite good, the rest I have either sold or given away as I did not find them partiularly interesting.

The ones I have and bring out every now and then, depending on opponent, are:

Thunder at the Crossroads from The Gamers
Roads to Gettysburg by Avalon Hill, although this is perhaps a better game for the strategic outlook rather than the tactical details of the battle itself.
Three Days of Gettysburg by GMT - probably my favourite game on this topic, but it does require some committment to play (i.e. not a beer and pretzel game for one evening)

MHO got started with my interest in Gettysburg by Avalon Hill. And the "Gettysburg: The Turning Point" by SSI. (1986ish - the Commodore 64 version - woot!) That's where I learned the CSA could never win the battle. Well, they could if the stars aligned perfectly. Anyone remember the early computer games by SSI? They were awesome.

Later on in my life I spent my high school years in Frederick, MD and I really wanted to understand Gettysburg for myself. So I started the site as "The Battle of Gettysburg Homepage" back several decades ago to write down what I learned and understood. That's why to this day MHO still has a big Gettysburg slant.

What is the best Gettysburg game on Steam right now?

Nice, thanks guys. Too bad it's hard to find some of those games for under $100! It may be worth it though considering the depth they provide. I think you can find the Avalon Hill games pretty affordable. Either way, thanks for the suggestions. Definitely something for my Christmas list.

I'm partial to Scourge of War: Gettysburg since I helped create it..

It's not on steam (although our Waterloo game is.) Scourge of War is more for the hardcore wargamer. If you're looking for something more "beer and pretzels" then Ultimate General: Gettysburg or their full Civil War title are both excellent. There's also Gettysburg: The Tide Turns which leaves much to be desired.. However, it's still pretty fun and unique for a quick tactical match (especially over MP.)

I recently got Last Chance for Victory by MMP. Jury is still out for me. Working out the orders phase is kicking my butt.
I also have Three Days at Gettysburg by GMT. I like this one. The chit pull gives the feeling of the unknown.
I have Terrible Swift Sword by TSR. This was and is the only one on Gettysburg I ever played head to head and finished from beginning to end. It took a few months.

I had the 70's version of Gettysburg from Avalon Hill when I was younger. Don't have it anymore.

Roads to Gettysburg II by MMP is an excellent game too. I play this genre the most.

Phil, if you want to write a review, I'll post on the site. Are you playing it solo or with someone?

Solo. Ironically there doesn't seem to be many people around Gettysburg that play these games.

I will write up something.
