'Barbarians' on Netflix

Hi all,
Has anyone else caught this yet? It's a six-episode historical drama about the attempt of the Romans to consolidate their early holdings east of the Rhine, culminating in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. It's in the same school as 'Vikings' and 'The Last Kingdom', if anyone has caught them. The Romans speak Latin and the 'Germans', German. The Netflix version is dubbed into English, but I set it back into German and used subtitles, which made it much easier to follow! The battle at the end (spoilers: the Romans lose, for once) is quite well done.
I rather enjoyed it, although as a historical piece it does leave a lot to be desired. I'm curious to hear any other views on it!
Cheers,
Colin

I have seen two episodes and don't mind it at all. Like the use of language throughout as it helps you to immerse in what's going on.
Cheers

I really like it. I'm on episode 3. Definitely need to switch to subtitles. The voice overs are very distracting (and bad) and the original voices make it 1000% better. Thanks for catching that. I also like several of the surprising plot twists in the first 2 episodes.

Thanks for the heads up.
I´m looking forwad to this. I have been inteested in this since 2009, the 2000th annivasary. I have visited the battlefield site and museum in Kalkriese and been following the amazing developments in battlefield archeology.

This sounds like something worth watching !
I hope it shows Emperor Augustus banging his head against the wall and shouting Quintilius Varus, bring me back my legions !

Hi Phil,
Sadly it doesn't, but rumours persist of a sequel, so we may well get to it!
Cheers,

This afternoon I watched the first two episodes.
If you like bit of blood and gore, interspersed with a bit of a bonk fest with an impossibly beautiful woman, this works.
What really impressed me was the Latin spoken by the Romans.
It makes a big impact : reminiscent of Mel Gibson’s Latin and Aramaic dialogue in that harrowing film The Passion .
It imparts an intellectual flavour to the thing, which makes the watcher feel a little more reconciled to the explicit sequences !
Regards, Phil

For Trevor: a 2020 German historical war drama television series created by Andreas Heckmann, Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf. It's only 6 episodes. Good barbarian fun. Don't take it too seriously.

Thank you Brian.
I´m not one who watches drama/entertaiment and demands absolute historical accuracy. I can enjoy it and hope that it encourages interest. History should also be fun.
I do, however, love spotting anachronisms. I´m wondering what kind of german the"germans" will be speaking.

The saluting legionare with a wristwatch. A plane flying over the last stand of the spartans. Some of the things I´ve seen. And, for the specialist, Napoleon wearing the uniform of a colonel of the Chasseurs of the Imperial Guard at the Battle of the Pyramids. I will not go into somewhat "overweight" confederates.

Not too bad a last episode. One gripe i have is the paper thin roman armor and the invincibility of German bare skin to blades. The whole roman army seemed to be very poor in combat.
Still a good little series to binge watch.

Hi Trevor,
Remember the line in ‘Gettysburg’ where the rotund (and somewhat elderly) Confederate soldier on the picket line says to the Harrison, the scout, “I’ll take you back there, but if nobody knows you then I’m afraid you’ll have to be hanged”?
What should have been a serious scene was just ruined by the absurdity of these particular Confederate troops handing out threats they would have had difficulty following through.
I still love the film though, warts and all.
Cheers,
Colin

This is a bugbear of mine too, in that high quality Roman armour and weaponry was a huge part of their success in the early imperial period. The only adversaries who could fight on anything like equal terms were the Dacian tribes with their falxes and the Parthians with their super heavy shock cavalry.
The ‘German’ victory in the forest was largely due to appalling judgment from Varus and excellent tactical planning from Arminius, but also because the Romans couldn’t get their troops into formation, and a lot of them seemingly fought without armour or shields after the initial ‘shock and awe’ ambushes.
Cheers,
Colin

I'll check it out. I hope it is more like "Last Kingdom" and less like "Vikings". "Vikings" needs to end soon, but of course I'll keep watching. "Vikings" plays too lose with the history. "Last Kingdom" is much better.
