Hi all,

I finally got around to watching the 2017 adaptation of the First World War play 'Journey's End', starring Sam Claflin, Stephen Graham, Toby Jones and Paul Bettany (and others). Set just prior to the German 'Spring Offensive' of 1918, it follows a company of British soldiers, mainly the officers, as they battle war fatigue, alcoholism and mental collapse as well as the German army.

It is an exceptional adaptation, with no small amount of emotional and pyschological trauma for the characters and the viewer. For those of you in the UK, it's currently available on BBC iPlayer. I'm not sure about international platforms, but I would urge anyone interested in the First World War to set aside the time to view it.

Cheers,

Colin

Colin, thanks for the heads-up. I believe I read Sherriff’s play some years ago. but have never seen it staged. Nor, until you mentioned it, had I heard of this adaptation.

So, again, thanks.

Cheers. And stay safe.

It's a great film, low on action but its depiction of frontline trench life and the stress it entails is excellent and highly recommended viewing.

This production certainly strikes me as one of the more convincing depictions of the Great War that the big screen has offered in the last few years.

The small screen - and here I refer to the BBC - pitched an excellent version some decades back. I wonder if it was in the 1980s or 90s. This was excellent, and might well be worth a trawl through YouTube .

I’ll try and find out the details.

It might even be better than the big film, and that’s saying a lot.

Edit : Found it. Yes, YouTube .....1988, Michael Simpson Full Movie. I saw it on the small screen, and assumed it was a BBC production ,which might be wrong of me. Recommended.

Regards, Phil
