Whats visiting Gettysburg like, the 1st part of July?

It has to be crazy, has anyone been there in this time frame, & survived? Comments and advice in general on visiting this great CW Battlefield?

Thanks,
MD

Been there and survived it. Traffic can be brutal, so it's best to park and walk as much as possible. Heat can be a real problem also so it's wise to carry as much water as you can. Crowds vary from area to area. Three or four years ago I did the battle anniversary walks and the crowds were bearable. The absolute worst I ever saw as during the 150th anniversary . Total gridlock at times.

Thanks Larry,

I can visualize how hectic it can be! But I still wouldn't mind being in Gettysburg, when so much history is being shared!

Glutton for punishment, I guess?
Anyone else have Gettysburg visits, they'd like to share?

Regards,

This year the traffic didn't seem to be as bad in years past. For once I didn't say out loud, "I hate living in this town".

One thing to watch out for is Bike Week.

I once made the mistake of thinking that the crowds would be much lighter the weekend after the annual re-enactment. I went to Gettysburg the weekend after the re-enactment and found out, once I got there, that it was Bike Week. All the motorcycles in the world were there. The traffic was utterly horrendous.

Bike week is happening right now and the bikes are thundering down the road right now at 10:22 PM as I type this. Years past, living in Lake Heritage it didn't bother me too much. Now, just recently moved onto the Taneytown Road, holy hell! I won't get too much sleep tonight or tomorrow night.

What we need is quieter mufflers on moter cycles, sometimes I think all those bikers want to do is raise holy loud hell!?

Do ya think??

Yes and no. There is some truth to the adage, "Loud pipes save lives". My motorcycle accident (very minor) happened for 3 reasons. First of all, the young air head was texting and pulled right out in front of me. Second, she said she didn't see me coming. (duh, she was on her phone) It was an overcast day and my bike was two toned silver and gray. Although very pleasing looking to me, I can see how in lower light situations it was hard to see, although my headlight was on. Third, she said she didn't hear me coming either. Which was true. My bike although having the "Harley Look" was a V-Star (Yamaha) 650 Classic. For it's size, it had power, but didn't have the bark to go along with it. In fact, my daily driver truck at the time with factory exhaust was louder. You couldn't even hear the bike while riding it as the air noise was louder. My current truck with an aftermarket muffler is way louder and both my muscle car and street rod are even louder yet. One or two bikes with a considerate rider isn't a problem. It's a problem for me when there's a whole gaggle of them and all they like to do is rev like douchebags. Living where I'm at now, there were a lot of considerate riders this weekend who were going into and leaving the campground near me. They didn't over rev while down shifting to turn into it and they didn't go wide open throttle leaving as well. I would have to say the little bit of time I was home this weekend it was about 60/40 good over bad. My 3 year old grandson who is sensitive to loud noises (He cries when my muscle car is running, but not when the street rod runs and he also cries when I'm using a power saw) was standing out in the front yard (supervised of course) waving to all bikers as they rode by and they waved back. My wife said about half of them made him cover his ears. In the past I was pretty much isolated living in a private community, but now living along a state road it will take some getting use to.

Anymore over crowded stories, anyone?

Hey Bob. My neighbor and I rode for several years. Usually I would ride in front and him in back. He had loud pipes and was an advocate. But, I also think yes and no.
The interesting thing about his loud pipes is that they're not loud if you're in front. I could barely hear his (well it sounded like normal(). Only when he pulled along or I was in back were they loud.
So it seems to me that most scenarios (cars pulling in front of you and basically anything you're approaching) it wouldn't help. Pulling alongside and if they're in front...definitely.
Still not worth it in my opinion, though.

Brian,

In the case of my old Jap bike, it couldn't be heard at all coming or going. Personally I feel stock pipes on the larger Cubic Inch HD engines are fine and even on some of the other newer larger Cubic Inch Indians and Polaris bikes. Living at my new place where the house is a few feet from the road I can hear a good bit of the larger engine bikes approaching my house. I can hear the crotch rockets only when they act like idiots and accelerate hard after a camper turns off into the campground or just coming from town attempting to pass another car. Most of the "fast & furious" type cars driving by my place are louder then the bikes.

My neighbor actually rode a VStar with the after market loud pipes. His was bigger cc. I rode a 1700 Vulcan. That thing was awesome with double the features and a lot cheaper than a Harley. I was all about just getting out on the road and enjoying myself.

Yeah, that must be really annoying living off a main road like that.

Now is a good time to visit. Thanks to the corona virus, the town isn’t crowded but with the gradual opening up, sit down meals may be had, though outside, in many area restaurants. The park, though not the visitors center, is open. By July 1, things should be even better.
So come and enjoy!

Is there any plan or dateline when the VC might open along with the ranger tours, etc?
Also are the motels operating normally?
