Military Geography/Geology
|
One of the aspects of Military History that I like study is the Geography and the Geology of the battlefields that I visit with my Pals.
We believe that adding a "hard" science to the study of a battle.....Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Math, Geography and Geology raises the tone and the level of the discussion and of the tour.
At the present time, I am in the process of setting up a study to review and learn how Geography and Geology affect the battlefield. I will probably add weather to this study. And I am awaiting a few books that I was able to buy on Amazon that deal with Military Geography. Usually when we tour, it is my contribution to discuss any geographical landmarks and their significance.

Gallipoli and Kokoda are certainly worth a visit for the extremes in Geography and terrain that soldiers had to deal with.
The Somme was interesting in its openness and the tactical advantage a small rise could gain a defender.

Terrain and the road network will be part of the study wen we go to Europe to follow the Ardennes offensive of 1944.
