James Rhone served in 20th Alabama, Co. F, CSA Infantry. Died as POW in Rock Island,Ill. Buried in Grave #539. Nat'l Archives records identifies grave number and location as 'South of Prison Barracks'. Nat'l Archives records note enlisted 'for the War' on Oct. 3rd, 1861 in Perry County, Alabama by Lieut. Spencer. Archives state wounded at Champion Hill (Vicksburg Battle) and noted as captured May 16th, 1863 and a Vicksburg POW. Sent to Memphis and then Camp Morton, Indiana & Fort Delaware, Delaware where he was exchanged on July 4, 1863. Taken prisoner again at Battle of Lookout Mountain (Missionary Ridge) on Nov. 25th and another record as 27th, 1863. Noted in field hospital in Bridgeport, Al in Dec. , 1863. Sent by train and Archives show him as POW at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky where he was sent to Rock Island on Dec. 1 and arrived Dec 23, 1863. Records note he died Feb. 20th, 1864 of Variola (smallpox). 'Rebels At Rock Island' -McAdams-Northern Illinois Press.- documents outbreak of smallpox at Louisville in Dec.'63 among CSA prisoners from Chattanooga, but infected prisoners sent on to Rock Island without notification of infection sent. Major outbreak in Winter 1863-64 and hundreds of Confederate POW's died. (Nat'l Archives copies in Richard Rhone file)
