Daniel Jones was born 1827, in Halifax County VA, to John Jones and Polly Brown. Daniel joined the 26th VA Infantry at Catawba Church, Halifax County VA, late September or early November 1861, along with his older brother, Fleming Brown Jones (born 1824). Daniel was killed July 30th, 1864 near Petersburg, during the Battle of the Crater. According to his wife's (Martha Beadles) pension application, '...near Petersburg, shot through the head with a mini ball, causing instant death.' Another record, the company muster roll, states he was killed 'in the trenches'. Daniel and his brother, Fleming Jones, quartermaster of Company K, were together their entire tour. Fleming however, was sick for months at a time during his tour. Daniel and Fleming were granted a furlough in Feburary 1863 to go home for several days because they received word that their families were homeless and in need of shelter. On the furlough application it was stated by their captain, that to their credit, they had earlier brought two deserters with them from Halifax County. A pass stated that Daniel and Fleming were good soldiers, and could be trusted to return, but the furlough also threatened desertion charges if they did not. Fleming survived the war and returned to Halifax County VA. Daniel Jones was my great great grandfather, and decended from Daniel Jones, who was born circa 1725 and was established in Halifax County during it's formation. I assume Pvt Daniel Jones was buried in a mass grave near Petersburg, having not found information that his body was returned to Halifax County.
