John D. Copelan Born August 6, 1834 to Obediah and Sarah R. (Credille) Copelan. In 1850 he and his family lived in the 148th Militia District of Greene County in the area around Penfield. Appointed 2nd Sergeant of Company E, 3rd Regiment Georgia State Troops October 14, 1861. He completed his enlistment and then enlisted as a private in Company K, 44th Georgia Infantry Regiment on May 1, 1862. Appointed 2nd Sergeant July 12, 1862 and 1st Sergeant June 1, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Married Sarah E. Wynn in Greene County on November 3, 1865. Died February 19, 1905 and is buried in the Liberty Church Cemetery in Greene County.
