My maternal great-grandfather, Foster Ignitious Few Freeman, was a Griffin (Pike-Spalding Co.), Georgia native, b. 2/8/1842, whose parents (Dr. Robert King and Mary Elizabeth Sessions Freeman) moved to St. Clair Co., Alabama, in 1850. At Montgomery, Ala. in June 1861, Freeman enlisted in the Ashville Guards, Co. A., of the 10th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA, part of Wilcox's Brigade under Brig. Gen. Cadmus Wilcox, a Goldsboro, N.C. native. Col. William Henry Forney, CSA, commanded the 10th. Freeman's unit saw action in the Peninsular campaign at Williamsburg, at Chancellorsville, and at Seven Pines where the unit lost 1,000 men in a week. Freeman also fought at Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Gettysburg. Freeman was present when Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Afterward, Freeman returned to farm near Ashville, Ala. There in 1867, he wed Elizabeth Jane Gibson. The Freemans moved the next year to Brownsville, Tenn. --- then on to Poinsett Co., Ark. in 1870, where they bought and farmed 160 acres on Crowley's Ridge at Greenfield, near Harrisburg. Freeman, father of six, became a postmaster, county school examiner, and he edited two newspapers before his death on Jan. 8, 1924. His elder daughter, Elizabeth Theodotia ''Lizzie'' Freeman, a Brownsville, Tenn. native, wed James Robert Beard. Their elder daughter, Nola Fay Beard Dean, married Joseph Edward Dean of Cincinnati, Ohio, grandson of a Union soldier. The couple lived first in Ohio --- then in Little Rock, Ark., where both Joe and Nola Dean died in 1983. (My paternal great-grandfather, Joseph Newton Dean of Xenia, Ohio, fought for the Union's 40th Ohio Inf. Volunteers during Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia campaigns.)
