Died in service to country on July 18th of 1862 in Lynchburg Virginia at a hospital set up for Confederates injured or sickened. Not directly related to him but half related to his descendants. Not sure what battle he was involved. He enlisted around May 15. 21. J. M. Tankersley - (John M. Tankersley) Company A, DeKalb County. Pvt. May 15, 1862. Died at Lynchburg, Va. July 18, 1862. Buried there in Old City Cemetery. No. 2, 2d Line, Lot 161. Died at Ford's Factory Hospital. Born in Ga. about 1834, living with wife Catherine Louiza Weir and a one year baby girl in 1860 census for Shallowford District, DeKalb Co. Ga. This website has more info on Company A http://38thga.com/drupal/node/175 Including pictures of headstones, burial locations and history. 'I did a check of his CSA service records and he died of Rubella, now commonly known as German measles, with no mention of any wounds. Lynchburg had a huge hospital complex of over a dozen major hospitals, because it had numerous tobacco warehouses and an access point to the railroad. Most of the soldiers who died there died of disease.' Dale Nichols expert historian from above website. Records back up what Dale says above. Very doubtful he died from wounds when death records clearly state rubeola but may have taken part in the battles below. May have participated in Battle of Gaines Mill or Malvern Hill. Unit took heavy fire during these battles and were asked to charge the enemy. They took heavy losses though they bravely carried out this attack.
