John Walker Bircket was born and resided in Edwards County, Illinois and enlisted at age 25 on August 5, 1861 in Xenia, Illinois. He was mustered in on August 10, 1862 as a Private at Camp Butler, Illinois by Captain Gamaliel Hoskinson to serve for three years. He was by occupation a carpenter and unmarried at enlistment. He was 5’ 11” tall and had dark hair, blue eyes and a dark complexion. He was wounded at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee on April 6, 1862. In May 1863 was listed as disabled and transferred to the Invalid Corps and then discharged from the army. He received a pension for “wounded through the body” of $8 per month in December 1882. He died on December 25, 1925 and is buried in Bone Gap Cemetery, Edwards County, Illinois.
