Enlisted May 15, 1861, Clayton, Alabama (Barbour County). As there was another Thomas M. Bryant (Corporal) in the 5th Alabama at the same time, he changed his official name on military records to 'M. C. Bryant'. The unit traveled to Pensacola, Florida, for equipping and training, then to join Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. While the 5th was en route to the Battle of First Manassas, he was mildly wounded at a skirmish at Farr's Cross Roads, VA. While recuperating, he developed pneumonia and was medically discharged on Jan. 11, 1862. He was paid a discharge and travel voucher of $63.66. He later traveled to Navarro County, Texas, where he and his wife, Harriett, owned a ranch until her death, after which, he lived out his life with his daughter, Maggie Allen Bryant Sterling, her husband, and their children in Wortham Texas (Freestone County). He is thought to have died between the 1900 census (on which he is listed) and 1910 census.
