Pvt. Co. F., 34th Regiment North Carolina Infantry Enlisted Sept 17, 1861 at Cleveland Co., N.C. by A.G. Waters for 1 years service Last paid April 30, 1863 by J.W. Clark. Killed in action July 1, 1863 at The Battle of Gettysburg. From the book 'Confederate Casualties at Gettysburg: A Comprehensive Record' by John W. Busey, Travis W. Busey pg.1103 - Carter, Jesse J.: 1 July and his effects were given to his father, William. Standing 5'8' tall, this 18-year-old farmer from Cleveland County enlisted 17 September 1861 in that county and took the Oath of Allegiance to his state. Residence Cleveland County NC; an 18 year-old Farmer.Enlisted on 9/17/1861 at Cleveland County, NC as a Private.On 10/25/1861 he mustered into 'F' Co. NC 34th Infantry He was Killed on 7/1/1863 at Gettysburg, PAHe was listed as:* Hospitalized 9/25/1862 Danville, VA (For wounds)* Returned 2/15/1863 (place not stated) (Estimated day)Other Information:born in Cleveland County, NCSources used by Historical Data Systems, Inc.: - North Carolina Troops 1861-65, A Roster(c) Historical Data Systems, Inc. @ www.civilwardata.com Listed as Pvt. in Co. F, 34th Regiment of NC Troops (Floyd Rifles). Bible states that he 'left home' October 10, 1861 and was killed at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Records indicate that he enlisted 17 September 1861 and agrees with Bible as to date and place killed. Also states the following 'The 34th was with General Jackson on his great flank movement at Chancellorsville and was near him when he was shot. After this hard battle the Army of Northern Virginia started towards Gettysburg and the Brigade, now known as Scales, because General Pender had ben promoted, for the first time had to retreat under fire. Scale's Brigade was in the second line of Pickett's Charge, but was repulsed and driven back in disorder, as was every other command engaged in that destructive charge.'
