Elisha was 38 years old when he enlisted in Capt. R C Emanuels Co. [Hatch's] Coastal Rangers aka 23rd Regiment SC Infantry. Enlisted 17 Oct 1861 at Sessionville SC near Charleston. Appointed 1st Lieutenant 17 Dec. 1861. Served in and around Charleston before being sent to Virginia. Fought is 12 major battles and numerous skirmishes. Sent to Mississippi and was engaged at Jackson. Returned to Virginia and fought in the trenches at Petersburg. Va. Lost 47 men at the explosion of the Crater. Last fight was at 5 Forks. The men from Marboro County were known as the {Douglas Rifles] Elisha's wounds or disease is not disclosed but he died soon after on 24 April 1865. He was under extreme stress as he in his short life had lost two wives before the war. He had remarried. The stress of the war and personal losses ease him into an early grave... His two sons died young and left no one to carry on his name.
