William is 14 years old in 1860. He enters the conflict late. He enlists at Bennetsville, Marlboro Co SC. at age 17 or 18. He has 11 cards in his archival file. The date of enlistment is conflicted. 30 March 1862 at Wilmington, or Feb 1864 at Sullivan Island, SC. He is enlisted by S Leggett. His rank is given as Sergeant upon entry and as Pvt on cover CMR. If Feb 1864 is his entry date he served at Bermuda Hundred, Petersburg Siege, The Crater, Fort Steadman, Five Forks during the battle of Farmville, Va. on 6 April 1865 where he was captured. He was sent to New Port News Va and paroled. He died 22 Apr 1926 and is buried at the Spears Family Cem, Marlboro Co. SC. We are related by a distant marriage.
