John was born 17 Oct 1843 in Coosa Co. Ala. He has 4 cards in his archival file. Enlisted 15 April 1861 at about age 18 at Loundsboro, Ala for 1 year by Capt. Bertrand. He is in Virginia when his last CMR states, discharged by special order 317 on June 30 no year given. However, After the war he moved to Caldwell Co. Texas and applied for a pension which was initially disapproved but upon reapplication was approved on 31 Aug 1909 Pension # 17230. His son applied for a burial warrant, and it was also approved. His pension records are in the Texas archives, and he is listed under the name J.M. Meadores. To confuse things even more these records are comingled with one of his relatives J.W. Meadows who also served in Alabama and filed from the same county. He died 28 April 1920 in Fentress, Caldwell Co. Texas and is buried beside his wife Maretha Henrietta Carter in Highsmith Cem. Guadalupe Co. Texas. This unit fielded 1,651 men. 260 were KIA, 119 died of disease, 650 were discharged or transferred. 40 laid down their arms at Gettysburg.
