Benjamin was 35 years old when he enlisted at Greenville Ala., on 2 Feb 1862 in Co B 54th later renumbered as 57th Regiment Alabama Infantry. He has three cards in his archival file. He survived the war and died in 1903. He married a widowed lady named Zilpha Elizabeth Tillman. He is buried at Hills Chapel cemetery, Grady, Montgomery, Alabama under a fine CSA stone. He is my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

Allen Tew was born abt. 1818 in N. Car and died Jun 23,1893. Even though he was 45 yrs old in 1863 he shouldered a musket and fought fot the South. He and his son,Peter Francis Tew, who joined up at the age of 15 yrs., were both mustered into Co.B, 57th Ala. Vol. Infantry, Shelly's Brigade. Allen Tew was a member of the Primative Baptist Church in Brundridge, AL. His wife was Sara Benson Tew. In a 1891 Troy Messenger newspaper article about old people in Pike Co. Said in 1836 he had fought desperatley the Indians in and around Pike Co.AL. He had 10 children and 58 grandchildren. He could still chop a acre of cotton or walk 25 miles in a day. 'He is remarkable for his preserverance,industry and honesty. His parents were John Tew from Sampson Co. N.Car. and and Sara'Sallie' Benton Tew Born 1823 in Dalles Co. AL. Sara Benton Tew was the dau of Samual Benton born about 1785 died in 1834 in Barbour Co AL and Sara Benton. This Sara is in listed in Samuel's will as his wife. we have not discocvered who her parents are.

Peter Francis Tew(PFT) was born about 1845. Son of Allen and Sarah Benton Tew. PFT and his father enlisted inCo.B 57th ALA.Shelly's Brigade,(PFT). Was wounded during war. Paroled with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston Army,Greensboro,N.Car May 2,1865at end of war. PeterF.Tew was married to Caroline(Callie)Sedonia Long in BlueSprings,Barbour Co. AL. Feb 11,1880. He was a member of the Confederate Veterans Camp in Enterprise,AL. He was wounded at the'Dothan Riot'in 1885.We do not know the details of this. Hard working farmer till health failed him late in life. Then he got a soda water route and delivered the soda to rural areas. Died in 1910. House was across the road from his daughter and sonin law William Joseph Perry Wilson about 10 miles from Enterprise, AL.

John Mallory Wilks - 2nd Corporal
John was 36 years old when he enlisted 12 Feb 1863 from Pike County Ala. He was promoted to 2nd Corporal 1 May 1863. He fought in the Dalton - Atlanta Campaign taking severe losses at battle of Peach Tree Creek. Engaged in battles of Franklin, Nashville and sent to North Carolina where his last fight was as Bentonville. He suffered a severe gunshot wound on 1 April 1865 and was sent on a 60 day medical furlough from hospital at Opelika, Ala. He was paroled 19 June 1865. He did his best against the invaders..God bless his soul.

Owned a cotton gin and farmed after the war. Lots of people from Ozark would come out to his farm on Sundays to hear 'Ole Uncle Joe' talk about the war. ...

My second cousin five times removed. Born May 4 1846. Enlisted as a Private in February 1863. The 57th Alabama Company D became Company F of the Consolidated 27th Alabama on April 9 1865. Wright P. Windham surrendered with the Army of Tennessee on April 26 1865, as an Orderly Sergeant. He was paroled at Greensboro NC on May 1st 1865. Died November 21 1921.

Thomas Marion Murphree - 2nd Lieutenant
Tom Murphree was originally enlisted as a private in Company E, 6th Alabama Infantry & eventually promoted to an officers rank afterwhich he was transferred to the 57th. His jacket is on display in the Alabama Historical Society in Montgomery. At Sharpsburg, he folded it & cradled Col. (later General) John Gordon's head after an injury. He went on to survive the battle of Peachtree Creek in Atlanta as well as the battle of Franklin (Tn.) & Nashville.
