Information obtained from Arkansas History Commission on pension application received from John Sevier Clark Fowler's widow, Annie Catherine Fowler, in 1901. In addition, Cooke County Historical Society in Arkansas also lists John Sevier Fowler as having served in the 1st Arkansas Calvary, Madison County, Harrell's regiment. John Sevier Fowler is my great great grandfather.

This man wrote several letters home to his sweetheart, Mary Jane Bentley. The letters were reprinted in a Conway Co., Ark newspaper and several of them have been used to do family research. He and his wife (to whom he wrote the letters) are buried in Morrilton, Ark. at Elmwood Cemetery.

Gerritt Van Valkenburgh - Captain
Captain Gerritt Van Valkenburgh was a member of Company B in Fagins Calvary later named Monroe's Calvary. Captured during the Battle of Pine Bluff. Paroled but later captured again at the Battle of the Big Blue during General Price raid in Missouri.
Released from Prison after the war. Spent time at Levanworth, Johnson Island Prison and Pine Bluff Military Prison. After the war he went back Pine Bluff to be a Lawyer.

Served until his death Feburary 19, 1863 at Granada, Missouri. Commanding officers were Captian W. H. Brooks, Col. Ras Stirman.

William Franklin Fletcher - Private
He enlisted in Co. E., 1st Battalion Cavalry (Stirman's), Arkansas Cavalry C.S.A., enlisted December 6, 1861, at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Muster Roll January and February 1863 shows him present. He was a private throughout the duration of the war and was captured July 4, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and paroled July 8, 1863, at same place, a private. His Captain was Captain Stirling Price. He was discharged 1865 in Texas. The documents also show his death to be 27 October 1900 near Howe, Oklahoma. Confederate Pension Application by Martha Fletcher #5115.

William was born in Tennessee in 1828 the son of Major and Frances Sanders. He enlisted July 9, 1861 in the 1st Mounted Rifles and was elected Captain August 2, 1862. After the war he returned to Sharp County, Arkansas and received a pension in 1901. He died November 18, 1912 in Sharp County.

Joseph Price Akridge - Private
Joe was born in Clarke County, Georgia circa 1834 to Levi and Nancy (Price) Akridge. Between 1860 and 1861 he had gone to visit his brother in Arkansas and June 14, 1861 he enlisted in Company F of the 1st Regiment Arkansas Mounted Rifles. In October of 1863 he was assigned temporary duty to General Joe Johnston's headquarters. After the war instead of returning to Georgia, Joe went to Collin County, Texas where he married Sarah Caroline Davis. They raised a family and lived in Collin County until Joe was killed in a family dispute August 25, 1886. He is buried in Whitewright, Texas.

Eli Hamer McDaniel - 1st Lieutenant
Eli enlisted as a Pvt in Co F 1st Arkansas Cavalry [Monroe's] at Arkadelphia, Ark on 23 August 1862 for 3 years. He was promoted from the ranks to 1st Lieut and assigned as Adjutant. He was appointed at Camp Kirby Smith on 21 Oct 1862. On 18 Sept. 1864 a roster dated in the field shows him assigned to Cabell's Brigade. His unit was surrendered 26 May 1865 and paroled at Brownsville, Texas on 21 July 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. Eli is my 3rd cousin 4x removed. Benjamin was about 22 years old. He enlisted at Monticello, Drew County Arkansas on 12 May 1863. This was Co L Monroe's Regt. 1st Arkansas Cavalry. Gen. Cabell's Brigade. He served his time in the Trans Mississippi Dept. He was detailed as a teamster to move supplies from Texas to the Regiment. He was born in Mississippi, Served the Confederacy in Arkansas and died 24 Sept 1931 at age 92. He was the husband of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed Susan Elizabeth Thomas b. 1840 died of Typhoid in 1860.

Thomas was born 28 Feb 1827 in Georgia. On the 1860 census he is in Bear House Twp, Drew Co. Ark. age 33. He is enlisted by J. M O'Nell at Monticello, Ark on 1 May 1861 as 1st Corporal and is shown on a CMR Feb 1864 as a 5th Sgt. Battles: Cane Hill, Prairie Grove, Fayetteville [ in this battle he lost his horse and gun] Back Bone Mountain, Pine Bluff, Elkins Ferry, Poison Springs, Marks Mill, plus Prices Missouri Campaign. Unit also known as 1st Fagan's -Monroe Cavalry aka 6th and Trans-Miss. Cav. As most researchers know there was another 1st Ark Cav known as Dobbin's. Thomas was the husband of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed Mary Thomas Everett married in 1860. Thomas died 8 Oct 1894 and is buried in Flat Creek Cem. Fountain Hill, Ashley Co. Ark.
