L (Lafayette) W. (Washington) Alexander
- Private
L. W. Alexander was my ancestor. He was born on the 4th of July and named after two Revolutionary War Soldiers. So it seems a little ironic that on May 15, 1862, in Dalton, Georgia he would be mustered in to serve for the Confederate army against the Union.

His civil war military records list him as L. W. Alexander, age 26, a private in Company E of the 12th Georgia Cavalry (Orginally the 4th Georgia Cavalry) Avery's Squadron of the Georgia Dragoons.

L. W. was enrolled by Lt. Colonel William L. Cook for the term of the war and was paid $180.00 for the use of his horse. They were stationed at Dalton, Georgia during the months of July & August of 1862.

He was captured Oct. 2, 1863. He was transferred from Camp Morton to Fort Deleware on March 19, 1864 he arrived there on March 22, 1864.

On March 7, 1865 Lafayette and fellow Georgians were sent to City Point, VA (probably by ship) and then transported again by boat to Camp Lee near Richmond where they were paroled on March 10th.

In the 1870 and 1880 census he is listed at Dalton, Whitfield County, GA.

In 1883 he died in Clearwater, Franklin County, Texas.

Family tradition says that Abraham got sick near Adairsville, GA Sara rode alone from Tilton to Adairsville and carried Abraham home. He died of pneumonia and he was buried at cemetery near Tilton.

General Sherman's troops destroyed the cemetery and moved the headstones around. Sara Jane never was able to locate her husband's grave
