Hope Hull Gates - Private |
Bennett Hope Hull Gates was born on May 4, 1818, the son of James Rowland and Elizabeth Cox Gates. He was the namesake of one of his father's brothers. He married Mary Boothe on April 23, 1845 in Troup County, Georgia. According to oral family history, 'Hull' was a Latin teacher, hence the name of their one son: Lucillius Numa Gates. Hull Gates appears on the roll of the 'Fannin Guards' which became Company B of the Georgia 60th Infantry Regiment, however, he apparently did not serve in this unit. He is also listed in the roll of Company K of the Second Georgia Cavalry (State Guards). He enlisted as a Corporal and mustered out a Private. He died about 1900 in Georgia.
