John A. Cozart - Private
Have little information on this relative. Cozart is just one variant of our surname, which originally was Cossart. John A. may have had a brother, William R, serving in the same outfit and company. John was the son of Anthony, first marriage; he appears with Anthony in the 1850 Monroe Co. Census; John was apparently born 1835 in Monroe Co. In 1860 he was in Terrell Co. He enlisted on the same day as William R., 5/11/1861, also in Macon. He was apparently discharged for disability 8/31/1861 in Pensacola, FL, after serving about 3.5 months. One record says he died 1863, cause/location unspecified. He was about 34-35 at enlistment. If any reader knows anything about these two, I would appreciate finding out about them.

William R. Cozart - Private
Have little information on this gentleman or John A. Cozart, who may be William's brother -- same regiment, same company. Cozart is just one of almost a hundred spelling variants of the original surname, Cossart. William was born in 1821 and enlisted at Macon on May 11, 1861 at age 39 or 40. He was apparently in Terrell Co., GA in 1860. He may be John's brother from his father's (Anthony's) first marriage. William was discharged 4/4/62 by Gen. Maxey for disability; he apparently reenlisted in Dawson Co. or Terrell Co. in August, 1863. He apparently also served in Wooten's Company of the 15th Battalion, State Guards.

I'd appreciate hearing about any information others may have on either or both of these heroes.

James Austin Shores - Private
James Austin Shores was in Co. H of the 5th Ga Infantry until there surrender in NC in 1865. He was my Great Great Grandfather and he lived to be 104. In November of 1864 the 5th Ga was detailed to Florence, SC to guard prisoners at the stockade. I was born less than 2 miles away 102 years later. I now live in walking distance to the old stockade where you can still see the earthen remains of the walls to the prison camp. James Shores died in Lakeland, FL in 1948. He was listed in the muster rolls as 'J Shores'. His father Alexander Shores, Pvt. also fought for the South in the 57th Ga Infantry and he also survived the war. His unit also surrendered in NC in April of 1865
