My great grandfather William E. Gilmer was born in Jasper County Georgia on August 14, 1848. In 1861, he enlisted in Jasper Volunteers (Co. C), 14th Gergia Infantry Regiment as a drummer boy. At the battle of Mechanicsville, he threw away his drum and was ordered to pick up a rifle musket. He was possibly the youngest Confederate soldier to become a rifleman. He fought in hard battles throughout the war with the 14th Georgia Infantry and finally deserted the Confederate army at the seige of Petersburg in March 1865 and walked home to Jasper County Georgia. William E. Gilmer moved to Texas in 1872, where he got married and settled in Lampasas County where he remained for the rest of his life.

Josiah Blair Patterson - 1st Lieutenant
Josiah Blair Patterson of Company E served was a school teacher from Cumming Ga. who enlisted with Lester's Volunteers in Cumming GA in June 1861 at the age of 46. As a young man he had served in the Seminole War (1835-1842). After surviving dozens of engagements (including Gettysburg)he was killed during the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse (during Grant's charge of May 12, 1864) on the eastern side of the 'Mule Shoe' salient. According to family history, Josiah was wounded by canister shot and as he was being removed from the field he and his litter bearers were hit again by canister shot, which killed all three men.

I am interested in any and all info on the Ga. 14th Infantry Regiment, especially Company E from Cumming GA. (Forsyth County GA).
