Andy J. Gardner was the younger brother of Charles Gardner. Charles Gardner volunteered for the 38th Georgia Infantry when it was established. The 38th Georgia was known as the Dekalb Murphy Guards. Of 1,200 men that joined, only 105 remained when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Andy was wounded and captured at a battle in Winchester, Virginia on September 19, 1864. Andy later died from the wounds on October 23, 1864 at a US Army Field Hospital. There were four Gardner brothers that joined the 38th Georgia Voluteer Infantry. All of the brothers were killed in the war. I grew up in Dekalb County, Georgia near their original home.

This website has more info on Company A http://38thga.com/drupal/node/175
Including pictures of headstones, burial locations and history. 'I did a check of his CSA service records and he died of Rubella, now commonly known as German measles, with no mention of any wounds. Lynchburg had a huge hospital complex of over a dozen major hospitals, because it had numerous tobacco warehouses and an access point to the railroad. Most of the soldiers who died there died of disease.' Dale Nichols expert historian from above website.

Records back up what Dale says above. Very doubtful he died from wounds when death records clearly state rubeola but may have taken part in the battles below.

May have participated in Battle of Gaines Mill or Malvern Hill. Unit took heavy fire during these battles and were asked to charge the enemy. They took heavy losses though they bravely carried out this attack.
