'He ... and enlisted in the Union Army, ... He was taken prisoner in the battle near Pocochontas, Tenn., and carried south and contracted a cold from which he never recovered. ... The hardships of a soldier's life caused his cold to develop into consumption and he died.' ... 'in July, 1866.'

He also served in the 6th Iowa Infantry and the 1st Alabama Cavalry.

He enlisted in Co E 11th Regt Illinois Vol Cavalry on Jan 5, 1864 at Peoria, IL. On Jan 14, 1864 he was mustered and then forwarded to Regt Mar 28, 1864, and to Camp Hebrins MS by April 12, 1864. He was of fair complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. he was mustered out as a private Sep 30, 1865 at Memphis, TN because of scurvy and diarrhea and general debility. (He was also known as Weatheral) His occupation was a farmer. He had lived at Peoria, IL, 1865-1878, Cherokee, KS, 1878-1923 according to his requests for pension. He is buried in Crocker Cemetery with his wife and daughters.
