Epp was at one time in Companies A, B, and E of the 14th Illinois and was in the combined 14th&15th in Company A. He enlisted in Company E, 14th Illinois on May 25, 1861, at age 17 as a drummer. He was captured at Acworth GA in October 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison where he stayed until April 15, 1865. He was on the Steamer Sultana when it blew up on April 27, 1865 and survived the explosion. He was buried in Leavenworth National Cemetary July 26, 1927. He was one tough customer.

Half brother of my 2nd great grandfather, John Jacob FATZER. J.S. was a private in Company D of this regiment before his promotion to Corporal and transfer to Company G. I have a letter on file J.S. wrote to John Jacob FATZER accounting for the movement of his (J.S.'s) unit near the end of the Civil War. J.S. was born in Switzerland in 1835 and died in Christian County, Illinois in 1920. He married Miss Margeretha M. MAISEL The couple had 7 children survive to adulthood.
