Dewitt enlisted in 1 June 1861 in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinios and was mustered out in Springfield, Illinois on 5 September 1864. He participated in the Battles of Pea Ridge, Stone River, Mission Ridge and in Battles in front of Atlanta, GA. He served under Capt. Thomas McKibben. He married Margaret Rebecca Randall 25 April 1865 in Fountain County, Indiana and they had 8 children: Alvin, Susan, Harvey, William, Sarah, Orie, Julia and Elizabeth. He died 18 February 1882 in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois and is buried in Farmer's Chapel Cemetery in Danville.

Williams brother Edward fought with the 92nd Illinois, was captured at the battle of Nickajack gap and spent a year in Andersonville prison. William wrote him after chickamauga but the letter was returned, William didn't know Edward had been captured. My dad has the letter.

Researching his 2nd wife's obituary: Isabel G. Browne. Robert H. Browne, MD (b. Aug 1835 in New York; d. 8 June 1909, Wichita,KS) and his Father, Nimmo Browne (from Scotland), were contemporaries of Abraham Lincoln and Robert H. Browne, MD wrote a book about their friendship with Douglas and Lincoln entitled: 'Abraham Lincoln and the Men of His Time', 1901. The volume tells about his father, Nimmo Browne, as well.
