John McClanahan - Captain   
Capt John McClanahan took a keen interest in raising troops and although in his 68th year, he was by acclamation elected Captain of Company B, 83rd Illinois Infantry. His company awarded him a sash and sword in St. Louis, Missouri on August 28th, 1862. He died at Fort Donelson on February 23, 1863 from the effects of the wound he received in defense of that Post on February 3rd in his 69th year of life.

Alex was my great-great-grandfather. He enlisted August 8, 1862 and was mustered out on May 20, 1865.

There were two newspapers in Monmouth, Illinois who published letters from the 83rd which I've gathered into two documents. One of them was letters written by the chaplain. If anyone is interested, please email me and I'll send them to you.

Williams Seamans enlisted in the 83rd Illinois Infantry, Company D on August 21, 1862. He was mustered out on June 26, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. William was married at the time of enlistment and had five children and his occupation was a farmer. William died February 26, 1900 and is buried in Wallace Cemetery in Jewel, Kansas.

M F Gray born July 25, 1842 in New Jersey where he lived until 1850 when he accompaning his parents to Knox County,Il. After finishing his education ,he engaged in farming until 1862 at which time he enlisted in Company K 83rd Illinois Infantry, in which he served 3 years moved to Poweshiek County Iowa after the war were he raised his family and died of Stomach cancer in 1895. He is buried at Kent Church just North of Brooklyn, Ia
