By 12/20/1862 he was at Holly Springs, Mississippi and in a surprise attack at dawn, 1500 were taken prisoner; John Quincy Post was one of them. By February 28, 1863, he was reported on the Benton Barracks, MO roll as 'in the hospital at Memphis'. He was released on 4/1/1863, in St. Louis, MO. He was never heard from again. The family believed that John Quincy and his younger brother, David H. Post were killed in the war as they never returned home. Brother Wm C. Post, Co. K, 27th Ill Inf was disabled, but was able to return home.
