James enlisted in the war for the Union, August 27, 1862, in the 25th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war - almost three years. He participated in the following battles: Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Jackson, Miss., Resaca, Marieta, and was with Sherman on the famous march to the sea. At Peachtree Creek he was wounded in the heel. He was at Washington, D.C., on grand review, and was mustered out June 25, 1865, at Davenport, Iowa.

Charles E Barker - 1st Lieutenant
When the war broke out in 1861 he was painting a house near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. His material becoming exhausted he went to town for a fresh supply and found the government calling for three month volunteers. He enlisted and did not return to his job. August 10th he re-enlisted in Co. H. 25th Iowa, Infantry, and was in seventeen battles and at the siege of Vicksburg. At Resacca, Georgia, he was wounded in the right leg. During the march to the sea Mr. Barker had charge of a forage detail and participated in many daring adventures. He entered the army as a drummer boy and was mustered out with the rank of first lieutenant.

I am seeking photo of Josias Pinkerton, my great grandfather. He was born in Somerset, PA,1832. Migrated to Illinois in the 1850s, married in 1857, moved to Henry Co., Iowa. Joined the 25th Iowa, August, 1862, and served all the way through from Arkansas Post, Chickasaw Bayou, and Vicksburg through Chattanooga and Atlanta campaigns, through Georgia with Sherman in the XV Corps, and through the Carolinas, taking part in the capture of Columbia, under Col. Stone. Marched in Grand Parade in Washington, May 24, 1865. Returned home and had 12 children in all. Moved to Beaverhead Co., MT in 1880s and died there in 1896.
