James B. Hastings - 2nd Lieutenant
4th Great Uncle - First Sergeant, Second Lieutenant, Company B, 11th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Born on March 3, 1830, in Virginia (Kanawha County, West Virginia). Moved from West Virginia to Kansas with his brother Henry in 1860 and arrived by boat from St. Louis to Atchison. Enlisted as a Private on August 18, 1862, and Mustered into Company B, 11th Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 30, 1862, at the age of 32. Described at enlistment as having blue eyes, auburn hair, a fair complexion, and standing 5 feet, 8 inches in height. Residence listed as Holton, Jackson County, Kansas. Promoted to Sergeant on September 3, 1862. Regiment fought at the Battle of Old Fort Wayne, Indian Territory on October 22, 1862, and at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas on December 7, 1862, where it suffered the highest number of casualties in Cloud's Brigade, with 3 killed and 29 wounded. Company and Regimental designation changed to Company B, 11th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in late April 1863. Promoted to First Sergeant on December 8, 1863. Commissioned Second Lieutenant on December 30, 1864. Served in Dakota Territory from April until July of 1865. Mustered out on August 31, 1865. Died on February 28, 1907, in Jackson County, Kansas. Brother of Corporal Henry I. Hastings, 2nd Colorado Infantry and 1st Colorado Cavalry, U.S., and Private William Hastings, 8th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A.
