Enlisted on 9/4/1862 at Louisville, KY as a Corporal.

On 9/21/1862 he mustered into 'D' Co.
He was Mustered Out on 6/14/1865 at Louisville, KY. Captured at
the battle of Chickamauga Georgia September 19, 1863. Along side him in this
battle was a distant cousin from Mauckport Ind., Marion Goldsmith, who
served in the Indiana 38th Vol., Co. B. This was the battle in which Marion
was wounded.

Enlisted on 2/15/1862 at Louisville, KY as a Private and mustered into 'D' Co. KY 4th Cavalry under Colonel Bales and Captain Barnett.He was listed as:
* Hospitalized in Louisville. He was at the battle of
Chickamauga, but was sick and unable to take part in it, being then in a horizontal position and able
to only witness the great battle. Nelson was in the battle of Murfreesboro and all the following battles to that of Chickamauga. He was discharged for disability Nov.11,1863 at Louisville, KY. He died 3/6/1907 in Cleveland, OH.
