James Sippi Johnson enlisted in Carter County, KY, on Sept. 25, 1863, in Co. D, 40th Ky Mtd Inf., USA. He participated in several battles and skirmishes in KY and VA. In many cases he was fighting against his 5 brothers who were all Confederate Soldiers with Field's Partisan Rangers and the 10th Ky Cav. James served in Co. D with three of his brother-in-law's, the Porter boys; John C., William, and Calloway.
James was mustered out at the end of his enlistment on Dec. 30, 1864.

The information I have shows John C.Porter charged a local rebel with being involved in the killing of three or four union home guards in Carter County near Burin,Kentucky.The local rebel,Henry Sloas who's son Franklin Sloas and brother John fought with fields rangers CSA.John Sloas took the oath out of Camp Chase Prison.He can be found now with this regiment fighting with the very men that stood against him a few months early.What a war brother against brother.I am not any kin to porter.

John Sloas can also be found with Fields Rangers CSA.John was captured near Webbville,Kentucky with his brother Henry and nephew Franklin.John was sent to camp chase and was release after taking the oath to the a Ohio unit being formed out of Camp Chase sometime there after he joined the 40th (Union )Kentucky.This divided the Sloas family in Eastern Kentucky.

Robert was a blacksmith. While on duty and in Mount Sterling,KY, Robert was shoeing the front hoof of a horse when the horse knocked him to the ground and stomped him. He survived but suffered the rest of his life. This info is from his pension application.

Previously served as 2nd Lt. in Company D, 18th Kentucky Vol. Infantry.
Commanded Company F, 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry from 1863-1864. Fought against Morgan at Mt. Sterling, and Cynthiana, Kentucky and fought at Saltville, Virginia among many other engagements against Morgan's Raiders in Kentucky.
Ran a tobacco business in Knoxville, Pendleton County, Kentucky, after the war.
Died in 1885 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.
