My great-great grandfather, Crim Smith, served the Union army with the 19th regiment company c Kentucky volunteers. He became ill from constant exposure during the seige of Vicksburg. He passed away during his journey home. A copy of the death certificate can be viewed at the address below...

[3 x great granduncle] Enlisted 12 Dec 1861 at Harrodsburg, KY. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 2 Jan 1862. Promoted to Captain 3 Aug 1863. Taken POW at battle of Sabine Crossroads, near Mansfield, LA and held at Camp Ford POW Camp, near Tyler, TX, for over 6 months. Exchanged 23 Oct 1864 and paroled at Red River Landing, LA. Reported for duty at New Orleans on 27 Oct 1864. Mustered out with regiment at Louisville, KY on 26 Jan 1865. Moved to Columbus, OH after the war and was a member of Wells Post No. 451, GAR. Lived out his days in the State Soldiers' Home at Sandusky, Ohio where he died on 10 Oct 1910.
