William Martin DeWitt - Private
William has two Cards in his archival file. He was 35 when he enlisted in March of 1862 at Shreveport, La. in Capt W B Denson's Co of Cavalry. He suffered serious injury to his left leg when the units horses stampeded at Little Rock Ark. His leg never healed and he was given a medical discharge. He moved to Texas and applied for a CSA pension. He is related to me by marriage.

Giles William Herring - Private
Giles was born 5 April 1834 in Carrol Co. Mississippi. He has 11 cards in his archival file. Enlisted at age 28 at Shreveport, La on 3 May 1862 in Capt. William B Denson's Co of unattached La. Cavalry. This became Co A of the 6th La. Cavalry. There is no definitive unit record for this group. However, there is a reference to the unit being referred to as [ Red River Rangers] He also served in Co D of this unit. His is documented twice as being on detached duty perusing deserters. Other names I encountered while researching this unit are: Capt. L.M. Nutt, Col. William G Vincent, & Col. Isaac F Harrison. Surrendered and paroled at Shreveport, La. 9 June 1865. He died 11 Dec 1911 in Caddo Parish, La. We are relatred by marriage.

Their are only two cards for James on file at the Archives. One is just the cover card and the other is a Roll of POW's We know he was from Bossier Parish La. and his brother was in Co C. of this unit. His unit surrendered on 26 May 1865 and paroled at Shreveport on 13 June 1865

Samuel Augustus Martin - Private
Samuel was born in Alabama 3 Nov 1823. He has two cards in his archival file. There is no complete history of this unit. It was formed Jan 1865 and some data suggests it was Sept 1864. It was known as Lt. Col. Harrisons Cavalry. Col. William G Vincent is mentioned as is Capt. Scott. The members served primarily as guards, scouts and couriers. Also did duty as tracking down deserters and draft dodgers as well as hunting Jayhawkers. It was surrendered at New Orleans and paroled at Shreveport 21 June 1865. Another data point [ Assembled near Miden, La Jan 1864 and in March 1865 it is on patrol on the west bank of the Miss. and then disbanded.

William Wilson Covington - Private
William enlisted at Monroe La. on 6 April 1862. His brother James Madison Covington was in Co. B of this unit. Wilson was in Capt. Thomas W. Fuller's Regiment. He was discharged on 7 July 1862 by S.O. 157 A.G.O. 62, Par. 8 .. It appears that he was stone deaf.

Originally joining at Monroe April 1862 as part of Bossier Cav.(81 men). Served Army of TN battles of Corinth(2nd), Iuka, Britton's Lane as Armstrongs Cav. Volunteered for N B Forrest Cav as part of 2nd KY (Woodward's). Forrest Dec 1862 raid actions at Lexington, Jackson, Trenton, & Parkers Crossroad TN. Went home to LA & joined Harrison's 6th LA Cav. Actions at Pleasant Hill and Marksville LA.

John Albert Sewall - Private
John was born 4 July 1845 in Shreveport, Bossier Parish, La. He was 9 cards and 2 documents in his archival folder. He was 17 when he enlisted first on 12 Mar 1862 in Bossier Cav. Capt. Thomas W Fuller's Co. and on 6 April 1862 it is noted that he is at Monroe, Louisiana. in Capt. William Harrison's Co. Balch's Battalion Cavalry. He was underage and there are two documents in his file marked [ consent for enlistment of minor] Assigned to the Trans Miss. Dept it has a fluid record that finds it attached to several other units. Its members were used primarily for Courrier, Bridge Guards, Scouts and detached on special service to look for Jayhawkers and deserters. There is scant information on this unit, and it is stated that it never became a regiment and remained at Battalion strength. He married Nancy E "Nannie" Doles and they are buried at Greenwood Cem. Shreveport, Caddo Parish La. He was the father-in -law of my cousin.

John Harrison Nattin - Captain
John was born 23 Feb 1840 in Flat Lick, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. He was 21 y/o when he enlisted for one year on 7 July 1861 in Capt. John L Hodges Co La. Infantry which became Co D 9th La. Infantry. He is left behind in Richmond on 21 July 1861 due to illness. He re-enlisted on 4 March 1862 in camp near Manassas. He is serving in Hay's Brigade. He has 43 archival cards in his 9th Infantry file and 2 cards in his 6th La. Cavalry file. He fought at Port Republic, Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, and 2nd Manassas where he was severely wounded. He is on wounded furlough until about Dec 1863. He received a battlefield promotion to 3rd Lieut. then Jr. 2nd Lieut. and them Captain He is absent on detail until around Nov 1863. He is transferred to the Dept. of Miss where he is promoted to Captain and is serving in Co E 6th La. Cavalry [Harrisons] His duties in the 6th La. Cavalry were primarily the fight in the Red River Campaign. He died 13 Dec 1923 in Collins Burgh, Bossier Parish. La. We are related by a distant marriage.
