Andrew James B HARPER - Private

From Lancaster, South Carolina, he had just moved his family to Arkansas when the war began. Harper, A. J. B. (also Harper, L. J.), Pvt. Co. E, 25th La. Inf. En. May 7, 1862, Monroe, La. Roll dated March 19, 1862, Recruited since entering the service. Roll for Nov. and Dec., 1862, Absent or present not stated. Roll for Jan. and Feb., 1863, Absent, sick. Roll for May and June, 1863, Absent without leave. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, Captured at Murfreesboro, Jan. 5, 1863. Sent to Camp Butler, March 14, 1863, from Military Prison, Ky. Paroled. Recd, at City Pt., Va., April 17, 1863, and exchanged. Roll of Prisoners of War, not dated, Remarks: Recd. at Camp Butler, Ill., March 14, 1863. Remarks: Dead. (So on Roll.) From http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/state/military/wbts/booths-index/ha.txt The family has a history that Andrew died at the Battle of Gettysburg. If he was released to the Confederates on 17 APR 1863 at City Point, VA, this is possible but seems very unlikely. I think that he either died on the trip to Virginia or died in prison.

The 25th Louisiana Infantry Battle Flag is located at the Confederate Museum in New Orleans. The display was ruined after a leak in the roof and the museum is seeking donations to remount the flag. It is estimated to require donations of $1000. I viewed a photo of the flag at the museum 3/17/2010 and would like to start donations toward restoration and redisplay. William G. Shanks died July 1, 1862 and is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Meridian, MS with Ross JA, Sheperd JL, and Jinks JD. A single marker is present marking their graves.
