His name also appears on the Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War Captured at Murfreesboro, Jan. 6th, 1863: “Sent to Camp Morton, Ind. Recd. at City Pt., Va., April 12th, 1863, and Exchanged.”

Samuel was born in Amite Co. Mississippi and moved to Concordia Parish, La. He was married to Margaret Harriette A Clayton. They had 3 small children. He enlisted 18 Mar 1862 at Monterey, Concordia Parish, La. He saw action at Farmington and Perryville. His Regiment was sent to Tenn. He was severely wounded at Murfreesboro, Tenn. and sent to Foard Hospital in Chattanooga. He died of his wounds there on 7 Jan 1863. His body was badly damaged. His estate was $1 found in his pocket which was accounted for by the Quartermaster. His is buried their in an unmarked grave. Much of his history was found in his Regimental records. Deo Vindice.. God rest his soul. We are related by a distant marriage on my mothers side.

The family has a history that Andrew died at the Battle of Gettysburg. If he was released to the Confederates on 17 APR 1863 at City Point, VA, this is possible but seems very unlikely. I think that he either died on the trip to Virginia or died in prison.

The 25th Louisiana Infantry Battle Flag is located at the Confederate Museum in New Orleans. The display was ruined after a leak in the roof and the museum is seeking donations to remount the flag. It is estimated to require donations of $1000.
I viewed a photo of the flag at the museum 3/17/2010 and would like to start donations toward restoration and redisplay.
William G. Shanks died July 1, 1862 and is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Meridian, MS with Ross JA, Sheperd JL, and Jinks JD. A single marker is present marking their graves.

Enlisted and was elected Captain with Company I of the 25th Louisiana Infantry on March 22, 1862. Present for roll calls beginning June 30, 1862, but was “Absent on recruiting service in Louisiana” from November, 1862 to June, 1863, on order of Gen. Hardee dated December 5, 1862. He was present again from July, 1863 to Oct., 1863. According to later rolls, he died Oct. 9, 1863.
