Company D
Joseph M Perkins - Corporal
Joseph M. Perkins was wounded 5/15/64 at New Market and killed in action, 6/5/1864 at Piedmont. He was a painter from Holyoke, Massachusetts, born in New Hampshire. He left a wife, Mary (Foxwell) b. 1845 in upstate New York. The family story, brought back by his comrads, was that as the union infantry were advancing, Joseph was running across a field and shouted to his friends, 'We sure are beating the heck out of them today,' or something to that effect. He was killed instantly by a bullet or an exploding shell. His widow, Mary, never remarried and lived out the end of her life in Boston.

Cpl. Ensign Marshall Smith was wounded at the Battle of New Market, Va. May 15, 1864. He recieved a foot wound during a charge, fell, then was shot point blank during a Confederate countercharge. The minie ball passed completely through his left lung, breaking ribs and exiting his lower back. After lying wounded from 3pm sunday to tuesday am, he was rescued by Solomon and Jessie Rupert. Jessie became known as the 'Angel of the Shenandoah.' He was later taken to the Confederate hospital at Harrisonburg. In August he escaped and walked 95 miles back to his Union lines at Keyser Va.
