Company E
Ira S. Chappell - Private
Ira S. Chappell enlisted as a private on August 8, 1861 at the age of 23 and mustered out on July 9, 1865 in Jeffersonville, IN. During that time, He re-enlisted once into Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment Michigan, on December 25, 1863.

My second Great-Grandfather, Ira S. Chappell (1837-1912) was born in NY, and settled in Portville, Cattaraugus County, NY. He is buried in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville. His father was born in Glastonbury, CT.
Ira married Sybil O. Rogers (1843-1926) in Branch County Michigan, and had one son, Charles E. Chappell (1860-1895), who married Leola A. (nee Reynolds d. 1917) and settled in Olean, Cattaraugus County, NY. Charles and Leola had three children, one of them a son, Sylvester Garfield Chappell (1882-1937), who also settled in Olean, NY, and worked for the Pennsylvania RR. Sylvester got his middle name because he was born a year after the death of President Garfield. Sylvester married Camilla Mae Jackson (1890-1978) a descendent of Revolutionary War Captain Jacob Stull of McKean County, PA, she worked at the famous 'Little Chicago' Olean House for many years until she retired in the 1950s. Sylvester and Camilla had seven children. Their sons were Lawrence E. Chappell(1905-1974) married Frances M. Isaman (1904-1986), Charles Irwin Chappell (1909-1935) married Erma C. Mead (1911-1960), William Howard Chappell (1911-1967) married 1st Florence Dunn (1917-2001) and 2nd Josephine Ulissi (1927-1998), and Joseph Carl Chappell (1926-1967) married Betty L. Gould (1933-2000); and daughters Leola Mae (1914-1955) married James Sweeney, Geraldine Orinda (1917-1976) married William Koblinger, and Dorothea I. (1919-2006) married Nelson Banfield.

There are still living relatives in Olean,Cattaraugus County, NY.

Ira S. Chappell is the son of Erastus Chappell of Mentz, Cayuga County, NY and grandson of Ira Chappell (1789-1845, son of CT Patriot Solomon Chappell) and Orinda Chappell (nee Pierson 1790-1880, daughter of CT Patriot Samuel Pierson/Pearson and Betsey Dickinson) of Mentz, Cayuga County, NY, and Sinclairville, NY. Both his father and grandfather died in 1845. He was living with his paternal grandmother, Orinda Chappell, on the 1850 census in Mentz.

Solomon Chappell (1759-1829) of Wethersfield (Rocky Hill), CT, served as a Revolutionary soldier, a Private in Abijah Savage's Co., Col. Henry Sherborne's Regiment; enlisted April 20, 1777; enlistment 3 years. His obit was published in the Connecticut Courant 1/5/1830. He and his wife, Abigail (nee Bell), are buried in the Old South Cemetery on Route 17 in South Glastonbury. His marker is badly damaged by acid rain, but the South Glastonbury Historical Society has documented what was originally written on the stone thanks to the WPA project during the 1930s.

Company E
Daniel Gleason - Private
Daniel Gleason, Tekonsha, Calhoun County, Michigan, died, January 14, 1861 at Annapolis Junction, Maryland at the Michigan Regimental Hospital. While records state date of death, cause of death, and the National Archives contain many documents of personal belongings and disposition, I cannot locate any records regarding final burial. False documentation states Daniel is buried at Annapolis National Cemetery, however, there are no burial records or a physical burial place. A few on line sources state 'burial records and headstone exist,' this has proven to be false. Any knowledge or information would be greatly appreciated. Gleason's personal belongings left to 2nd Lieutenant Hiram S Warner of Calhoun County, and I suspect a possible relative.
