Stephens records are sparce. Born in 1845, He was about 17 when he enlisted in Co E 16th Miss. Cavelry. This unit was formed in Yalobusha County Miss. from unorganized units in response to Sherman's raid on Meridian Miss. It was know as Armisteads Cavalry Brigade. He is buried at the Odd Fellow Cemetery, Macon, Noxubee Co. Miss. His stone is inscribed; CSA Co E 16th Miss. Cav. In 1864 he rode under the command of Gen.Nathan Bedford Forrest.. Deo Vindice
