Nimrod Smith - Private |
I have headstone and pension applications which state that Peter was in this unit. However, the only service records I could obtain was for an 'N.J. Smith' who died in a hospital on July 24, 1864, in Macon of wounds sustained July 20th during the Battle of Peachtree Creek, so this is not my relative since he survived the war. I've seen the muster rolls for this unit, and there is nobody else listed that could be him.
I have another headstone application that says that Peter was a member of the 4th MS cavalry. According to information on both applications, it has to be the same man. I have obtained service records from the cavalry unit, but I'm not sure if this is the right man because, according to a list of headstone registrations, there is another man of the same name in the same unit, but he's from Simpson County. So the service records may be his.
Nimrod 'Peter' Smith, Sr. is buried in Steep Hollow cemetery, located in Pearl River County, Mississippi. His headstone just says 'Confederate States Army'. No specific unit is listed.
