Col. John Weir, a son of Thomas and Isabella [née McKee] Weir, was born on April 7th 1833 in Wilcox County, Alabama. His parents were originally from Fairfield County, South Carolina. When John was about 7, his family moved to Choctaw County (later Winston), Mississippi. Here John was educated and raised. In 1861, a volunteer army was organized at New Prospect, Mississippi. This company became Company D, known as The New Prospect Greys; in which John enlisted as a Captain. Company D and the other companies formed the Fifth Regiment, Fourth Brigade, of Mississippi Volunteers, known as the Army of Mississippi; which formally organized with the election of field officers on September 5th 1861, at Enterprise. After the battle of Shiloh, Capt. Weir (in which he was wounded) was promoted for his gallantry to the office of Major over two Senior Captains, and at the reorganization of the regiment he was elected Colonel. Besides the innumerable skirmish and picket fights, Col. Weir's Command was in 18 general battles.

After the war, John Weir returned home and married Miss Emily Anna Miller with whom he had six known children. Col. John Weir departed this life on June 9th 1900 at the age of 67 years. He was laid to rest in the churchyard cemetery at Weir Presbyterian Church; where he had served as a charter member and Ruling Elder.

Washington H. Brigman was from Marion County, SC and he had moved to Monroe County, MS in the early 1850s where he married Mary Ann Morris and begun a large family. He entered the war as a private as soon as fighting broke out. He was captured by Union troops at a battle at Resaca, GA in 1864 and sent across country via troop trains to Camp Morton, a Union POW camp in Indianapolis, IN. He gave oath upon his release from there in May of 1865 and apparently returned to Monroe County, MS and fathered one additional child. After that he was never heard of again.

1841-1911. Enlisted 29 Apr. 1861. He fought in MS, TN, KY,and FLA. He was wounded at Shiloh. He was captured at Franklin and sent to Camp Douglas, Ill, where he took the oath in order to be released when the war was over. After walking back to MS he decided to return to TN where he married and raised a family of 12 children. He was my gr gr grandfather.

I believe the company was mustered in Paulding and may be 'state troops'

It's possible Stephen Lewis was a POW and died in a camp in Indianapolis.

I'm looking for information on 3rd Lt. Charles W.(C.W.) Long. He's my Great,Great,Grandfather. I know he died in 1862, but I don't know how or where he died, or what battles he fought in. Any help would be great.

Mustered into service,5th Mississippi Infantry, Co.B, Bogue Chitto Rangers 8/5/1861 as sergt. 29yr. old. Fought in battles of Shiloh, was promoted to captain, Corinth, Murfreesboro(stone river), Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, Chickamauga siege, Chattanooga, Peachtree creek, Atlanta, Killed in command of company B in the afternoon of July 22, 1864 in the second assault at union rifle pits. Was with Cleburne's division, Lowery's Brigade of Hardee's Corp. I would appreciate any help in knowing of the location and movement of the 5th during this day or Atlanta campaign.

Ira Marion Nash and elder brothers John J.N.Nash and Charles A. Nash enlisted in Co B. ''Neshoba Rangers'' at Enterprise, Mississippi in August 1861 (but Charles subsequently joined the 11th MS Infantry Regiment). After service in Pensecola, the Regiment was moved to Corinth. Both Ira and John were wounded at Shiloh during the the 8:30-9:00 morning attack on the Union Camps (the 5th was in the first assault on the far right of the Confederate line). Ira suffered a head wound, never regained consiousness and died late that evening. He is buried in one of the mass graves at Shiloh.

My g.g.grandfather PVT John J.N. Nash and his younger brother SGT Ira Marion Nash were both in Co B., 5th Ms Infantry at Pensecola and Shiloh. They were both wounded during the Confederate attack on U.S. General Prentice''s camps at Pittsburgh Landing (Shiloh) the morning of April 6th, 1862. Ira had a head wound and died later that evening. John was wounded in the thigh and was brought home when CSA General Beauregard removed the Army back to Corinth. John was subsequently treated at the CSA hospital at Enterprise, MS. After recovery John J.N.Nash joined a mounted home guard unit in Neshoba County, MS (Wilson''s Company of Mounted Men).

Corpl. William Strong Gladney, a son of Charles Strong and Nancy [née Gladney] Gladney, was born in the bounds of Lebanon in Fairfield County, South Carolina on January 31st 1822. After his father died, William and his widowed mother moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi. Here William was educated and married Miss Margaret Elizabeth Hanna with whom he had four children. In 1861, a volunteer army was organized at New Prospect, Mississippi. This company became Company D, known as The New Prospect Greys; in which William enlisted as a Corporal. The 5th Mississippi Infantry became part of the Army of Tennessee; seeing action from Pensacola to Atlanta. During heavy skirmishes near Cassville, Georgia on May 19th 1864; 2nd Corporal William Gladney was wounded. While recovering from his wounds, he died in a Confederate hospital in Cassville days later. His remains were buried in Cassville Cemetery, along side approximately 300 unknown brethren in arms; who sleep underneath marble slabs on a down sloping ridge on the northern side of the cemetery.

Alexander Thompson Hanna, a son of Andrew and Jane [née Thompson] Hanna, served as 1st Sgt. in Company D, 5th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. The company called the 'New Prospect Grays' was made up of volunteers from Winston County, Mississippi. On August 26th 1861, the company went to Warrigton Navy Yard near Pensacola, Florida and was placed in charge of a battery of three siege pieces, and was well versed in artillery drill. Here 1st Sgt. Alexander Thompson Hanna was mortally wounded and died. It was written in company correspondence: 'In his death the company sustained irreparable loss. He was a gallant soldier, a true patriot and a Christian gentleman.'

Alexander T. Hanna was married to Miss Jane Strong Gladney; with whom he had two daughters:

▬ 1st Sgt. Alexander Thompson Hanna mortal remains were brought home and buried in the family plot at Bethsalem Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Tollison, Choctaw County, Mississippi.

James Hutchinson, Jr. joined the Confederate Army and served in Company D, 5th Mississippi Infantry along with his brother, John Hutchinson. Both were taken prisoner during the war. James enlisted as a private in Company D, 5th Mississippi Infantry (New Prospect Grays), on 1 September 1963, two years after it was organized. At the time his wife was pregnant, and he requested that if the child were a boy, it would be named after him. Born January 3, 1864, a girl, James Anna Hutchinson, joined the family. The New Prospect Grays took part in 18 general battles with half of their men being killed or wounded during the war. Because of this, it was later consolidated with other battalions. Among the battles in which this unit fought were Shiloh, Kennesaw, Peachtree Creek, Fort Donelson, Franklin, Chickamauga, Murfreesboro, Corinth, Missionary RIdge, and Tanner's Ferry. Although it does not show in his military records, it is interpreted that James was captured at Blakely, Alabama, in April of 1865. This is based on family tradition together with prison records of a James Hutchinson appearing under Regiment 35. This was part of the campaign for Mobile, one of the best fortified cities in the south. Three thousand four hundred and twenty-three prisoners were taken at Blakely and removed under Negro guards to Ship Island, Mississippi. While there, they received cruel treatment. These prisoners were paroled at Vicksburg, and according to family tradition, James walked home from there. As he approached the house, he hollered 'Hoop Pee!!!'. His wife recognized his voice, and all the family ran out to greet him. As he was covered with lice, he did not allow them to touch him until he had washed completely in hot water.

Jackson was 49 years old when he enlisted 1 May 1863 at Columbus Mississippi. The 5th Regiment was a unit composed of men to old to be assigned to regular combat units and were used as reserves to be called upon as needed. That call came when they were sent to Vicksburg. Jackson was captured 4 July 1863 and paroled. The unit was disbanded on 26 Aug 1863 and Jackson was mustered out.

Pvt. Jerome Martin Weir, a son of Hugh and Sallie [née Weir] Weir, was born at his maternal grandparents home in Mississippi.

During the Civil War, Jerome enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 5th Mississippi Infantry. During the Tullahoma Campaign in Tennessee, Private Weir was mortally wound and died on November 30th 1862. 'Age 20 years, 1 month and 18 days'

My Great Grandfather, Robert Bailey Chandler mustered into Company 'F' of the 5th Regiment (State Troops) in Louisville, Ms. Was paroled at Vicksburg when Pemberton surrendered.

He enlisted in the 13th Miss. in May of 61 and was in new company A of that until March 12, 1864 when he was exchanged to company F of the 5th for Wilson Leach. He was with the 5th and in the Tennessee campaign under Hood until he lost his leg at Spring Hill on Nov. 29th. It's possible he may have had a younger brother, William J. McDaniel in the 5th.

Buried at Center Ridge Methodist Cem. in Winston County, MS.

Alfred has three CMR's in his archival file. He was born in South Carolina in 1820. He was 42 years old when he enlisted at Meridian, Miss on 15 Sept 1862. The records to not give details but he was discharged by Surgeons Certificate on 26 Oct 1862. He was the husband of my 3rd cousin 5 x removed. He died 15 July 1902 in Pickins Co. Alabama.

Samuel was born Feb 1843 in Leake Co. Miss. The 1860 census has him at 17 Y/o in Neshoba Co. Miss. the Post Office is at Laurel Hill. He enlisted there on 18 Oct 1861 in Capt. Z Booth's Co. It is 52 miles to rendezvous. Mustered at Enterprise, Camp Caroline by Lt. J.S. Lanier for 1 year. He has 36 cards and documents in his archival file. This became Co K 5th Miss. Infantry which was called the [Scotland Guards] and was raised in Neshoba County. Assigned to J.K. Jackson's & Lowery's Brigade Army of Tenn. 25 March 1862 he is detailed as a Teamster in the Quartermaster Corps. Battles: Pensacola, Fla. 1 Feb 1862, Shiloh, Tennessee, Atlanta & Carolina Campaign. General Johnson surrendered 26 April 1865. There were 1717 men who served in this Regiment. Samuel died in 1912 and is buried in the Black Jack Cem. Pearle River, Neshoba Co. Miss. He married twice. We are related by a distant marriage. May God rest his soul.

John was born 19 Oct 1837 in Chesterfield Co. SC. He moved to Miss. and was there when the invasion began. He enlisted at Camp Carolina at Enterprise, Miss on 20 July 1861 in Capt Z. Booth's Co. Miss Vols. and mustered at Enterprise in to Confederate Service 18 Oct 1861. He has 13 cards in his archival file. CMR 24 Aug he is guarding a bridge at Battle Creek, and again as bridge guard Big Black River near Vicksburg, Miss. 1 Aug 1864 he is promoted to 3rd Sgt. His regiment surrendered 4 July 1864 with the fall of Vicksburg. He served until the end of the was when his regiment surrendered at Greenville, NC. I have little documentation of the regiment after Vicksburg. His wife applied for and received a pension [filed 23 Nov 1925 & approved 11 Dec 1925 ] while living in Anna, Collin Co. Texas. He served with Capt. McBeth, Cheatham's Brigade, Cleburn's Division. He died 9 Dec 1937 in Precinct #4 Collin Co. Texas and is buried in the Chancersville Cem. in that county.
