My g-g-g grandfather was born in Tennessee but moved to Rankin County, Mississippi in the 1850s. He joined the Lowry Rifles, Company D of the regiment, in late 1861 or early 1862. At the battle of Champion Hill he was with the part of the regiment that was sent out as skirmishers and got cut off and were forced to retreat into Vicksburg after the battle. He survived the siege of Vicksburg and afterwards was detailed on a surgeon's certificate for disability and assigned to Brandon, Mississippi, where he assisted in collecting the tax-in-kind from local farmers.
