Company D
George W H Rhea
- Corporal
George W H Rhea was a valiant soldier of the south and like so many others should be honored for such sacrifice he gave to a cause he obviously believed in.

George enlisted at Holly Springs, Ms on May 29 1861 joining Capt. Henry E. Williamson's Co. He traveled 56 miles to Corinth, Ms and mustered in 4 June 1861 to Co D 17th Ms Volunteers. He moved up in command to 3rd Corporal as appointed by his superior Capt. Walker on 6 April 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg more than once as records show him in the hospital near Gettysburg with a flesh injury to the left leg on 21 July 1863. In the next month a more serious injury was inflicted in action again and this caused him to be taken to S,A Hospital in Petersburg, Va. where his left arm was amputated on 31 Aug 1863. He was recorded as absent with leave July and Aug 1864. He was paid 5 cents per mile to travel 1000 miles home in Ms. He received discharge with commendation for service.

This is taken from records in the National Archives.

Jesse C. Woodard is my Great Great Grandfather; I'm trying to find his burial site
which I thought would be near Burnville, Mississippi. I need to know the names of his sons as at his death some were brought to Overton,Texas by an uncle and Jesses'
father; we do not know which son stayed in Mississippi and would be my paternal
grandfather. Also I need to know the correct name of Jesses' wife who we believe
was Sarah Jones-Woodard.

My great-great-great uncle. A handsome, single student from Early Grove, MS. We have a dauguerreotype portrait of him. George fought in the battles of First Manassas, Ball's Bluff, Seven Days, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. He was captured on December 11, 1862 as Union forces forced a pontoon bridge across the Rappahannock. George was parolled (we have his Parole Certificate, signed by the Provost Marshal of the Army of the Potomac)a few days later. He rejoined his company, but was invalided to Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond with fever during March and April. In May he rejoined Company F, marched to Gettysburg, and was killed in action on July 2, 1863 during Barksdale's Charge. Buried in a common grave of Gettysburg dead in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. We obtained a free headstone for him in 2011 from the VA, and it is situated with other headstones belonging to several of the dead in that grave. We also have the small Bible he carried in his haversack. Someone later penned in the back of the Bible: 'Killed Getisburg (sic), Pennsylvania, July 2, 1863' His Parole Certificate had been folded in the Bible. George Poole was 20 years old.
