Son of Daniel Mackintosh Leaming and Mary Tucker. Brother to Union veterans Mack J. Leaming, Edward H. Leaming, Silas T. Leaming and William J. Leaming.

Enlisted as a private in Co. D, 10th Illinois Infantry April-December 1861 then joined 7th Missouri Infantry in 1862, mustered out 1865.

Served as County Clerk for Shawnee County, Kansas where he was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Buried Arlington National Cemetery.
