Maness J. Strawn - 2nd Lieutenant
Strawn (Straughn), Maness Jordan
Maness Jordan was born 28 January 1844 in Hardin County. He was the son of John Carroll Strawn and Sophie Stockton. When Maness was about 10 years old, the family moved to Stoddard Co, Missouri. When the civil war began, Maness enlisted. During the war, he was captured and kept in prison at Camp Morton, Indiana until the end of the war. On 7 May 1865, Maness was paroled. He returned to Stoddard Co. where he learned that both of his parents had died. He then returned to Hardin Co, TN and lived with his uncle Lloyd Strawn until his marriage to Nancy Jane McCasland 29 August 1873. Nancy was born 9 September 1854. Around 1887, Maness and Nancy moved to Bob's Landing, Decatur Co., TN. Then 2 or 3 years later they moved to the Nebo community at Bath Springs. Their children were: Sophie, John, Tom, Allen, Isaac, Nancy V., Albert, Virginia, and Mary. Albert was born 16 April 1885 and married Hattie Alexander Britt who was born 18 January 1894. A grandson, Melrose Stephens, was also raised by Maness and Nancy after his mother Sophie died. Maness and Nancy were members of the Christian Church or Church of Christ and Democrats. Maness died in 1911 and Nancy in 1946.
John Carroll Strawn was born 1809 in Hardin Co and died 1862 in Missouri. He married Sophie Stockton in 1830 in Hardin Co, TN. Their children were: Thomas Stockton, John and a twin brother, Margaret, Malinda, Celia, Maness J., Mary A., and Allen.
John was the son of William H. Strawn born 1780 in NC and Elizabeth also of NC. They married in 1801 in NC and both died in Adamsville, Hardin Co., TN. Their children were: Matilda, Nancy Sarah, Lloyd, Elizabeth, Rebecca, John Carroll, and Calvin. William's 2nd wife was Emaline Ledbetter Polk in 1846. Their children were: Lewis Cass, Lucy Neal, and James H.(adopted).
Richard Strawn IV, revolutionary soldier, was born in 1761 in Orange Co, NC. He was the son of Richard III who was born in 1732 who married Lucy Pae of Caroline Co, VA in 1755. Richard and Lucy were the parents of Stephen, Milly, Richard, Betsy, Hosey Isaiah, and Lucy Fielding. Richard IV moved from NC to Hardin Co, TN where he died and was buried in the Ledbetter Cemetery. His children were: William, Stephen, James, Richard, Green, Isiah, and Joel.
Richard II, born 1706 in VA married Miss Leftwich, born 1710, in Caroline Co, VA. Their children were: Ruben, Richard, James, Crispin, William, and Stephen.
Richard Straughn born in 1680 Scotland was the father of Richard II. He married in 1703 to Catherine Murrel who was born 1681 in Middlesex Co, VA.

A cousin, Pvt. Alonzo Hollowell was born in Ky., lived in Warrensburg, Mo. at start of war. Was captured at surrender of Vicksburg in July, 1863. Later served in 10th Missouri Cavalry C.S.A. Twin brother of Pvt. Miles Hollowell, also of Co. A, 5th Missouri.

I am not related to Major Waddell but my family members (Wheatley's) all served under him when he held the rank of Captain. His information is as follows.
Age 24. Enlisted December 2, 1861. Enlisted in MSG (Missouri State Guard) Co. 'E' 3rd Regt. Infty., 8th Div., Johnson Guards. May 1, 1861 promoted 2nd Lt. June 1861 elected Captain of Co. 'A' 1st Batt. Infty. CSA on January 1, 1862. Reelected Captain May 25, 1862. Promoted to Major September 1, 1862. Battles in Carthage, Wilson' Creek, Lexington. Killed in Battle of Altoona, Georgia on October 5, 1864.

Went to Trans-Miss Army on furlough and never returned. Prior to this enlistment he served in the MSG (Missouri State Guard) at Pvt. in Co. 'E' 3rd Regt. Infty., 8th Div.

David was born in Richmond, Virginia. His family moved to Dunklin Co Missouri. He enlisted as a Pvt. in Co A Capt Taylor Pickard's Co. Missouri State Guard. He was elected 1st Lieut, and then to Lt. Col. After assignment to Co K of the 5th Regt. Missouri Infantry he is elected to Captain. He is on recruiting duty in Dunklin Co when he is captured and sent to Camp Chase then on to Lookout Point , Va. He is exchanged. He was then appointed Ouartermaster of Phelan's Infantry Regt. of the Mississippi Dept. He died 4 Jan. 1910 and is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Kennett, Missouri.

John Wright - Corporal
This is my great/x2 grandfather. He entered service in Clarkton, Dunklin County, Missouri and did training at Bloomfield, Stoddard County, Missouri. He was in the battles of Iuka, Corinth, Big Black Creek, and Port Gibson, all in Mississippi. His service ended after the seige of Vicksburg. He was granted amnesty and sent home to Clarkton, Missouri.

He is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery near Clarkton.
