Served as a Private in the Sappers and Miners Company of the 14th Brooklyn NYSM (84th NY). Company mustered out after Bull Run Aug 8, 1861. Looking for company photos from this period. Prior to the war he served in the US Navy aboard the Steam Frigate Mississippi from 1857-1860.

Louis Strauss was born in 1842 in Vacha, Germany; Immigrated to USA in 1852; Worked in US Post Office Brooklyn; Enlisted 25 April 1861 at Brooklyn to serve 3 years; Mustered in 23 May 1861 as a Private; Company G; Wounded at Second Manassas 29 Aug 1862; Convalesence ay Harwood Hospital Washington DC, Central Park Hospital NYC and Fort Wood Hospital Bedloe (Liberty) Island; Returned to duty Oct 1863; Mustered out with Company 6 June 1864 in NYC; He was one of only 107 original members of the unit to muster out. I'm the Greatx2 Granddaughter of Louis. Any additional info or pictures would be appreciated!!

My great grandfather is buried at Green Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. in Section #188, Plot #14528. His headstone is a white stone with the following: Wm. F. Twibell, Captain,
84th N.Y.S.M., May 11, 1886.
From the source:' New York:' Report of the Adjutant-General Abbreviation: NY Roster published by/on 1894-1906 it states:
William F. Twibill (note: name is misspelled ) 84th Inf. Reg. NY Enlistment Date: 18 April 1861,Place: Brooklyn,NY, Rank,Private, Age:25
15 August 1861 Full Sergt.
18 June 1862 2nd Lieut.
10 February 1863 Captain
06 June 1864 mustered out at New York, NY
His regiment was also known as the 14th Brooklyn Regiment,the the Fourteenth Regiment and the Brooklyn Chasseurs.
He was wounded twice: His two documented Casualty Sheets are 1) On August 30,1862 at Manassas, VA(2nd Bull Run)and 2) On May 10, 1864 at Laurel Hill, VA. Both state that the nature of casualty was 'WOUNDED'.
I am in possesion of the original regimental book titled The History of the FIGHTING FOURTEENTH. This book contains the picture of my great grandfather. His last name was often recorded and misspelled by the regiment's clerks as Twibelle,or Twibill. The family name is TWIBELL.
